SensiClass: Tackling Sensitive Topics in a Classroom
Between March 2020 and August 2022, the CEU Center for Teaching and Learning (now the Yehuda Elkana Center for Teaching, Learning, and Higher Education Research) was part of the Erasmus+ project "Tackling Sensitive Topics in a Classroom", which involved the cooperation with Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie (Poland), Tartu Ülikool (Estonia) and Univerzita Hradec Králové (Czechia).
As a result of the three-year concerted effort between the experts from the associated institutions, a wide array of educational resources was developed to assist educators to teach with awareness and empathy, as well as to equip them to efficiently respond to controversies arising in class, handle sensitive topics, and create safe environments, as a prerequisite for inclusion. Research teams covered topics such as gender, radicalization, Islam, social work, multiple identities, stereotyping, and other topics that are important for teaching in a diverse environment, with the goal of helping teachers to develop meaningful courses for students who come from diverse backgrounds, for example, with respect to their geographical and cultural origins.
Uniquely, the project contains resources adjusted to the Central and Eastern European environment, and hence among the long-term objectives are the development of a high-impact pedagogical strategy to enrich classroom instructions and promote social change, and the advancement of change in attitudes of mistrust and preconception, by creating an inclusive teaching environment and promoting methodologies of inclusive education.
