OSUN Teaching Development Courses and Certificate

The OSUN-funded Developing Teaching Professionals (DTP) project, led by CEU’s Elkana Center, offers courses on teaching in higher education for doctoral students, faculty, and other colleagues with teaching-related responsibilities at OSUN institutions. Courses may be taken on an individual basis or as part of a comprehensive teaching certificate program.

N.B. The certificate is only offered to participants who began taking courses before July 2024. New participants are eligible to take individual courses and will receive certificates of completion for the courses but are ineligible for the full certificate program, described below.

OSUN DTP Teaching Certificate

Certificate Structure 

The Certificate has four steps and is between 4-7 US credits (previously 5-8 US credits), depending on your prior experience. It is designed to be completed in two years, on average. Many courses can be taken flexibly (e.g., starting with an elective on a topic of interest or with the core courses). The Certificate is designed as follows: 

Core Courses 

  • Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education (YELC 6101). 2 credits. First in a two-part sequence providing a systematic approach to teaching fundamentals, focusing on the design and delivery of lessons/sessions. May be waived upon petition.  
  • Learning by Design(YELC 6105). 2 credits. Second in a two-part sequence providing a systematic approach to teaching fundamentals, focusing on course design and assessments. Participants must previously take Foundations or contact dtp@ceu.edu for exemption 

Electives 

  • Electives worth 2 credits in total (either two, six-week courses, or one twelve-week course. Electives can be taken at any time. 

Capstone Portfolio 

  • Submission of a Teaching Portfolio. As of AY 24-25, participants no longer need to complete the one-credit course, Creating a Faculty Teaching Portfolio (YELC 6207). Instead they should attend the corresponding workshop and receive individual guidance as they revise their portfolio components (mostly created during the previous courses). Other courses must be previously completed before submitting the portfolio.

Each course meets weekly, online, with readings and assignments, and provides US credits. Participants should expect to invest time outside of the weekly meetings. Unless noted, application is directly via SITS (for previous participants) or for new participants, via a two-part OSUN DTP expression of interest form, followed, if successful, by formal application and registration via SITS.

  • Democratic and Inclusive Teaching & Learning (YELC 6158), September. 17 - December 10, 2024. Tuesdays from 1:30pm - 3:10 pm, 2 US credits. Concepts, examples, and classroom-focused strategies for greater inclusion, and modeling and preparing students for democratic participation. Deadline: Sept. 15, 2024

Introductory Courses in Winter and Spring 2025:

  • Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education (YELC 6101 C ), January 9 - April. 3, 2025. Thursdays from 10.50am - 12:30 pm CET, 2 US credits. First in a two-part sequence of teaching fundamentals, focusing on the design and delivery of lessons/sessions. Deadline: Dec. 1, 2024

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) 

How do I register for OSUN DTP courses and/or the Certificate? 

Please register for individual courses. No registration for the certificate is required or accepted at this time. Participants who previously took courses before July 2024 will automatically receive their full program certificate after completing all certificate requirements. Participants who join thereafter will receive certificates of completion for the individual courses they complete.

Previous course participants should confirm their continued participation in the 2024-25 academic year via the SITS application link shared directly via email. New participants should complete the OSUN DTP expression of interest form by the deadlines noted above. If successful, they will be invited to submit their formal application with the required information via SITS. 

If you are a CEU doctoral student, please always register via SITS.

CIVICA doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows should register via the ESR Course Catalogue 

During the expression of interest process, you will be asked to provide basic information, such as your name and contact information, current role at an OSUN institution, and motivation for taking one or more courses. After the deadline passes, your information will be reviewed, and successful individuals will be invited to complete their formal applications via SITS. Please note that due to high demand, we are unable to accept all eligible applicants. Please make sure you notify the course instructor or dtp@ceu.edu if you have registered for a course but are unable to attend as planned so your spot can be potentially offered to another applicant.

Who is eligible to attend OSUN DTP courses? 

Unless otherwise noted, OSUN DTP courses are open to CEU, CIVICA, and OSUN doctoral students, faculty, and other colleagues with teaching-related responsibilities. 

Are the courses offered free of charge? 

CEU does not charge participants in the OSUN DTP program, neither to apply nor to take the courses. However, it is not responsible for costs you incur during your participation, such as the cost of a computer or of connecting to the internet.

What is the time commitment of an individual course? 

There are many types of development opportunities. OSUN DTP courses are unlike typical workshops or training sessions. They have the formal structure of university courses. Each course meets weekly, online, includes readings and assignments, and provides US credits. Participants should also plan on investing a few hours a week, outside of the weekly meetings to prepare. At the same time, they are designed for professional adults with full-time university careers who seek practice-oriented insights and techniques they can immediately apply. They extensively feature participants’ exchanging knowledge and good practices with the support of expert facilitators. Finally, they are a chance to build community and connections with fellow OSUN educators. 

How long does it take to complete the OSUN DTP Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education? 

The Certificate is 4-8 US credits in length, depending on experience. That is the equivalent of 8-16 ECTS. It includes both taught courses and the submission of a teaching portfolio, which you compile during the courses. 

The Certificate is designed to be completed in two years, on average. It is possible to complete the Certificate in as little as one year, or as many as three or more years.  

Do I have to start with the Foundations course? 

You may begin the Certificate either with the Foundations course or with electives. Qualified candidates may also petition to begin with Learning by Design. Certificate candidates who skip Foundations generally have a) received other formal teaching training, or b) three or more years teaching experience in higher education. They will also be asked to submit evidence that they have met the outcomes of the Foundations course. Please contact dtp@ceu.edu for additional information. 

Who teaches the courses? 

Most course facilitators come from Central European University (CEU)’s Yehuda Elkana Center for Teaching, Learning, and Higher Education Research, which leads the OSUN Developing Teaching Professionals project. CEU is proud to have two decades of experience in facilitating teaching development opportunities across the region and globe. Since the late 1990s, CEU colleagues have trained over 1500 external faculty and leaders. Originally, its work was primarily in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia, transforming teaching practices in post-socialist countries. Over time, what became the Elkana Center has developed a more global reach, while keeping a regional footprint and working extensively with CEU doctoral students and faculty. The center also plays active roles in Erasmus+ projects and in the OSUN and CIVICA alliances. 

Can I obtain a certificate or documentation for just one course, or do I need to take the full certificate program? 

While all participants are encouraged to pursue the full Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education, we recognize that some OSUN colleagues find it useful or necessary (e.g., for annual reviews) to document their participation in individual courses or workshops. For this OSUN DTP awards “mini” certificates after each course. A list of terms follows: 

  • Certificate of Attendance is awarded for participants who fully attend a course or workshop but do not complete assessed work or receive credit 
  • Certificate of Completion is awarded for participants of a course who have completed all necessary work to receive credit. 
  • Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education (OSUN Developing Teaching Professionals) is awarded to participants who have completed a comprehensive program of teaching development courses (4-8 US credits/8-16 ECTS) and submit a portfolio demonstrating their teaching effectiveness. 

Is the Certificate accredited? 

The Certificate is not formally accredited, e.g., by the Agency for Quality Assurance and Accreditation Austria (AQ Austria), as it is a non-degree program. However, Central European University, whose Yehuda Elkana Center coordinates and teaches the OSUN DTP program, is an institution accredited by both AQ Austria and the Middle States Commission in the United States. Furthermore, the curriculum of the certificate program is informed by relevant international frameworks, e.g., Advance HE’s Professional Standards Framework (PSF 2023) and is increasingly recognized, together with Bard IWT/CLASP’s CLASP fellowship program, as the leading teaching development standard within the OSUN network. 

What will I learn in the Certificate program? 

Participants learn many things throughout the program. Above all, they are encouraged to work with course facilitators to think about how they can use what they are learning to enrich the courses or educational experiences they teach or support. 

Additionally, there are six main learning outcomes for the Certificate program, and candidates who complete the Certificate will be able to demonstrate foundational levels of competence in the following core areas of teaching, learning, and assessment in higher education: 

  • Design - Design and creation of context-appropriate materials to support teaching, learning and assessment  
  • Facilitation – Facilitation of student learning using appropriate methods, approaches and techniques  
  • Assessment – Creation of appropriate methods for assessment and feedback to support student learning 
  • Supervision – Cultivation of approaches and structures to supervise research, mentor, and assist students in their development 
  • Inclusivity - Creation of an effective learning environment that is inclusive, respectful and allows for diversity  
  • Development – Ownership for one’s own development as a scholarly and reflective practitioner and engaged in self-evaluation of the effectiveness of one’s teaching
