Getting Started Lecturing and Facilitating YELC 6002

Getting Started Lecturing and Facilitating

Getting Started Lecturing and Facilitating (YELC 6002) is designed to support doctoral students who are completing their teaching practicum or other teaching assistantships and do not anticipate completing Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education (YELC 6101/3) or the full Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education. It is designed as a companion to the Getting Started as a TA course (YELC 6001). The two courses, each six-weeks in length, are scheduled so that they can be taken simultaneously (at the same time and day of the week).

As a short, hands-on course, Getting Started Lecturing and Facilitating is intended to help students design and facilitate a lesson/session during the teaching practicum. To this end, it explores the basics of settings goals and learning outcomes for a lesson; how students learn; strategies for lecturing, discussions, and lesson planning; and what can be learned from observing peers teach.

Students choosing to take Getting Started Lecturing and Facilitating (YELC 6002) must take it either in the same semester as their teaching practicum or teaching assistantship, or in the semester that precedes it (provided it is the same academic year). Furthermore, because the main assignment is to design and teach a session during a TA-ship, students must obtain permission from a faculty member to teach a session in an existing course. Without this teaching experience, one may audit the course but not receive credit.

N.B. No credit is given for the Certificate of Teaching in Higher Education. Students pursuing the Certificate should instead take Foundations of Teaching in Higher Education (YELC 6101/3), which covers the topics of this course in greater depth and with a broader basis for teaching development.
