Fourth Annual Elkana Symposium
Educating for Freedom: Universities in an Age of Constraints
Conference Date and Location: March 9-10, 2026 in Vienna (in-person)

The Elkana Symposium is an international gathering that brings together educational developers, educational theorists, higher education researchers, and faculty to discuss the intersections of teaching in university settings and broader social contexts. This year’s theme is, “Educating for Freedom: Universities in an Age of Constraints.”
We are currently accepting proposals for 15-20 minute presentations on topics related to the conference themes, including, but not limited, to the following:
- Democratic teaching and learning practices, curricula, assessment, and student experiences
- Teaching and learning practices that empower students or teachers while enhancing educational outcomes
- Educational practices that transcend the walls of the classroom and contribute to social engagement and civic life
- Democratizing digital learning and responses to generative AI, digital transformation, and environmental challenges that promote the above-mentioned values
- Research on academic freedom and autonomy specifically related to teaching and learning
By December 6, 2025, please submit your presentation proposals on these or other pertinent themes via the application form. You will be asked to include an abstract of 300-400 words and five keywords.
