Thoughtful Preparation for Teaching Assistantship at CEU: A Hands-On Workshop Offered by the CTL

In the Fall term of this academic year the Center for teaching and Learning (CTL) offered a special workshop on session design to CEU Teaching Assistants. Facilitated by CTL Postdoctoral Fellows Gorana Misic and Margaryta Rymarenko, teaching assistants engaged in planning teaching sessions and designing learning activities that are student-centered, meaningful and feasible.

Central European University’s (CEU) Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy and International Relations invites outstanding young scholars interested in pursuing a doctoral degree with a specialization in higher education policy to apply for the Yehuda Elkana Fellowship. The fellowship is offered to those candidates who are successfully admitted to the School’s doctoral program to pursue advanced education and research in Higher Education Policy and is awarded for a period of 36 months in total. The Fellowship fully sustains the students during their graduate work at CEU, including tuition costs, living expenses, research travel, a semester abroad, a write-up grant, and medical insurance, allowing them to concentrate entirely upon their studies. This is a Full Doctoral Scholarship.

Diversity and inclusion have lately become the buzzwords for higher education institutions. As student numbers become larger and their cohorts more diverse, Universities are keen on creating regulations, frameworks, programs, and missions proclaiming that diversity is their key concern. The challenge, however, remains as to how one translates these complex concepts into teaching strategies that meet concrete student needs in the actual classroom.

Simulations promote critical thinking and application of knowledge in complex or ambiguous situations, as well as more effective contextual learning. Students can better connect theory and practice, but also gain a deeper understanding of an issue at stake. Moreover, simulations often induce emotional responses, which enhances student engagement and attention, and promotes long term retention.
