Call for Essay Competition: Reimagining Academic Freedom
OSUN Global Observatory on Academic Freedom (GOAF) welcomes all undergraduate and graduate students attending an OSUN institution to send their essays for the essay competition on the topic of Academic Freedom under the title “Reimagining Academic Freedom”, broadly defined.
The Global Observatory on Academic Freedom, a project supported by the Open Society University Network (OSUN), conducts rigorous, innovative and pertinent scientific research aspiring to respond to the urgent need of rethinking the concept of academic freedom, a concept whose crisis we are witnessing throughout the world. New times pose new challenges, theoretical as much as empiric, and GOAF seeks to stimulate the debate, connect the interested stakeholders, and reflect upon possible pathways vital to the preservation of academic freedom and democratic societies. We wish to provide an opportunity for students to engage more in this endeavor by contributing to the reflection on global reconceptualization of academic freedom, from a diversity of disciplinary approaches, regional outlooks, and epistemological understandings. We especially welcome interdisciplinary work and innovative theoretical contributions.
Please send your contributions to goaf@ceu.edu by June 1, 2022. Contributions should consist of two separate PDF files. The first document should contain your name and surname, study level and field, your institution, and your contact details. The second document should contain your essay fully anonymized (please be careful to delete any possible identification details in the properties data of your document). Please use Chicago Manual of Style for referencing. The length of the essay should be up to 4000 words in English language typed in Times New Roman; 12 pt.; with 1,5 line spacing. No previously published works will be accepted. Only one entry submission allowed per person. Submitted essays will undergo double blind evaluation, based on the originality, clarity, and argumentation of the essays, by the respected members of OSUN GOAF Advisory Board and Postdoctoral Fellow: Dr Kwadwo Appigyei-Atua, Associate Professor, University of Ghana School of Law; Sjur Bergan, former Head of Education Department, Council of Europe (CoE); Dr Diana Kormos-Buchwald, Professor of History, Caltech; Dr Robert C. Post, Sterling Professor of Law, Yale Law School and Dr Milica Popović, Global Observatory on Academic Freedom, Central European University.
GOAF will establish the list of first three winning essays and awarded students will be notified by September 1, 2022. We will publish the announcement on our webpage and inform the winning authors by email. The winning essays will be published on GOAF’s webpage and the first winning essay will be published in GOAF’s Annual Report on Academic Freedom for 2022. The three winners will be invited to join GOAF’s OSUN Research Network on Academic Freedom and actively participate in all future GOAF’s events.
