CEU Teaching Development Grants support faculty members in developing teaching projects that advance student learning, with a particular focus on strengthening the connections between research and teaching, integrating new technologies to support learning, and incorporating problem-based learning.
Professor Tiziana Centofanti’s project, ‘Visualizing Causality: Using Real-Time Plant Diagnostics to Bridge Research and Teaching,’ will enrich environmental science teaching by integrating real-time data collection and data-driven practices into the classroom, giving students the opportunity to explore environmental challenges through hands-on research, problem-based learning, and evidence-based inquiry.
Professor Maria Kronfeldner has been granted a TDG for developing a new course, ‘Philosophy of Life and Ecology.’ The project will combine experiential learning, interdisciplinary approaches, and in-class AI workshops for research in philosophy to help students explore contemporary philosophical questions through new teaching and learning approaches.
The awards are allocated to applications that both a) advance the grantee’s development as a teacher and b) improve student learning. The outcomes of the project should be measurable and sustainable beyond its lifetime.
Administered by CEU’s Research Support Office (RSO), Teaching Development Grant funds may be requested for expenses necessary to fulfill the project and which directly advance the staff member’s teaching development and/or student learning. The approval of the budget is at the discretion of the selection committee and responsible RSO program coordinator. Examples of expenses approved in the past include the hiring of a doctoral student to serve as a Teaching Assistant or as a project assistant, the costs of attending teaching-related workshops and conferences, honoraria and travel costs of guest speakers, admission tickets and travel for student experiential learning, and software or other teaching-related equipment or materials required for implementation of the teaching development project. The fund may not be used for faculty salary support.
Grant recipients receive ongoing support and consultation from the CEU Yehuda Elkana Center throughout the design, implementation, and evaluation of their teaching innovation projects.
The call for CEU Teaching Development Grants is announced annually and awarded in two funding cycles: a spring cycle, with applications due in May and awards announced in June, and an autumn cycle, with applications due in November and awards announced in January.
