Christof Royer is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Yehuda Elkana Center for Higher Education, where he conducts research on the idea(l) of open society, organises academic events, engages in conversations with major publishers and academic centres that have demonstrated interest in the concept of open society, and seeks to establish synergies between partners of the Open Society University Network (OSUN).
Christof, who holds a PhD from the University of St Andrews (UK), is an international political theorist whose research straddles the disciplines of International Relations, Political Theory and International Law. His research is, thus, interdisciplinary in nature, and he seeks to address complex questions surrounding mass atrocities, global justice, globalisation, human rights, political violence, contemporary practices of surveillance and democratic struggles and contestations. In doing so, he is inspired by the insights and ideas of – among others – Aristotle, Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, Judith Shklar, Karl Popper, Edward Said, Ulrich Beck, Judith Butler, Chantal Mouffe, and James Tully.
In 2020, Christof published his first book, which is entitled Evil as a Crime Against Humanity: Confronting Mass Atrocities in a Plural World. He is also the editor of a recent (2020) special issue on ‘Judith Shklar’s International Thought’, an attempt to harness the potential of Shklar's work as an inspiration to think through, and address, international/global political problems. In addition, he has published articles in leading academic journals such as Human Rights Review, Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy, Criminal Law and Philosophy, Journal of Intervention and Statebuilding, or Humanity.
Prior to joining CEU, Christof was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, taught surveillance studies at the University of Dundee, and was a tutor at the University of St Andrews. When he is not working (and, of course, after the lockdown), you can find him on the tennis court or at music concerts.
